Understanding Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies are urgent situations that require immediate attention to prevent serious complications — whether that means relieving severe pain, saving a tooth, or stopping a spreading infection.
At Olympic Park Smiles, we understand the anxiety that comes with a dental emergency. Any oral issue causing significant pain, uncontrolled bleeding, swelling, or risk of permanent tooth loss qualifies as an emergency.

Common Dental Emergencies
If you are experiencing any of the following, call us right away at (403) 300-2224.
Persistent or intense tooth pain that does not respond to over-the-counter pain relief warrants same-day care to identify and treat the cause.
Cracks from injury or biting can expose the nerve and invite infection. Prompt treatment prevents further damage and preserves the tooth.
Act fast — a tooth re-implanted within 30 minutes has the best chance of survival. Keep it moist and call us immediately.
Swelling, fever, or a bad taste in your mouth alongside tooth pain may indicate an abscess. This is a serious infection requiring urgent attention.
An exposed tooth is vulnerable to pain and further damage. We can replace your restoration quickly and protect the tooth beneath.
Lacerations to the gums, lips, or tongue that do not stop bleeding need immediate evaluation.
Before You Arrive
These steps can make a critical difference while you are on your way to our clinic. Call us at (403) 300-2224 so we can prepare for your arrival.
Keep it moist. Gently place the tooth in milk or hold it in your cheek pouch. Do not scrub the root. Call us immediately and get to the clinic within 30 minutes.
Rinse with warm salt water. Take acetaminophen for pain relief — avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum. Call us to book a same-day appointment.
Rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on that side. Call us right away.
Cover the exposed tooth with dental cement (available at pharmacies) or sugar-free gum as a temporary measure. Come in as soon as possible.
Do not ignore swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing — these may indicate a spreading infection. Call us or go to an emergency room if the clinic is closed.
